Rebate money is real — if you know where to look.

Between utility programs and federal incentives, Aurora homeowners upgrading HVAC equipment can often recover a meaningful chunk of the cost. The catch: programs change, paperwork matters, and not every install qualifies. Here’s the honest map.

The three buckets of money

  • Xcel Energy rebates: Colorado’s largest utility has historically offered rebates on qualifying high-efficiency furnaces, air conditioners, and especially heat pumps. Amounts and qualifying specs change year to year.
  • Federal tax credits: recent federal energy incentives have offered credits (not just deductions) on qualifying heat pumps, high-efficiency systems, and related upgrades, subject to caps and eligibility rules.
  • State and local programs: Colorado has periodically layered additional incentives on electrification upgrades like heat pumps.

Why heat pumps get the biggest checks

Utilities and regulators want efficient electric heating for a reason: modern cold-climate heat pumps use far less energy than resistance or older gas heat across a Front Range winter. That’s why the largest incentives in recent years have targeted heat pump installations — sometimes making a heat pump genuinely less expensive than a like-for-like furnace-and-AC replacement.

If you’re replacing both an aging AC and an aging furnace, this math is absolutely worth running before you decide.

The paperwork traps

  • Qualifying lists matter: equipment usually must meet specific efficiency ratings and appear on the program’s qualifying list at install time.
  • Deadlines are real: many programs require applications within a set window after installation.
  • Contractor requirements: some programs require registered or participating contractors. Ask before the install, not after.
  • Keep everything: invoices, model numbers, AHRI certificates. The paperwork you toss is the rebate you don’t get.

How we help

When we quote a replacement, we tell you which current programs the quoted equipment qualifies for and what the claim process looks like. Programs shift — so verify current details on Xcel Energy’s rebate page or ask us when we’re quoting. What we won’t do is wave around stale rebate numbers to close a sale.

The one-call version: if any of this is happening in your house right now, skip the homework — call (888) 217-1674 and a local tech will tell you exactly where you stand.

Quick answers

Do rebates apply to repairs?+
Generally no — incentive programs target new, qualifying equipment, not repairs.
Can I stack utility and federal incentives?+
In many cases yes — utility rebates and federal tax credits are separate programs. Eligibility details change, so confirm the current rules before counting the money.
